There has been a lot of buzz around blue light glasses. The purpose of these glasses is to filter out blue light that is emitted by screens. The problem is that blue light glasses do not help prevent eye strain from electronic devices which is the chief complaint from viewing screens over time. Many people tend to get dry eye syndrome when they view screens for long periods and glasses won’t get you to blink more. There are treatments if you are suffering from dry eye but we suggest that you first try the following:
- follow the 20-20-20 rule: every 20 minutes you look at an object 20 feet away for 20 seconds or longer
- work in a room that is well lit
- increase the contrast on your screen
- use a matte screen filter to reduce screen glare
- use artificial tears to re-moisten eyes
- use your device a way from a ceiling fan or vent
Most eye symptoms caused by electronic screens are temporary and should lessen after you stop using them. If you have persistent eye strain, pain or soreness, it can be an indicator of a more severe condition. Contact Grosinger, Spigelman & Grey ophthalmologists in Bloomfield Hills for an appointment.
