Despite the fact that glasses have become quite the fashion statement in the last decade or so, there are still plenty of reasons an individual might want to lose the frames. For some, contacts are a perfect solution, but for others, a more permanent method is the answer. Some simply have trouble with contacts and prefer not to wear them, while others’ vision problems are too severe for contact lenses to correct. In either case, there is one overwhelmingly popular option for perfect vision: LASIK surgery.

LASIK (Laser-Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis) is a type of refractive laser eye surgery used to correct common vision problems like farsightedness, nearsightedness and astigmatism. Essentially, LASIK uses a refractive laser to burn away tissue and reshape the cornea to correct the patient’s vision. The patient is given strong numbing eye drops to ensure a painless procedure, and may even be given a mild sedative to help them relax.

The procedure takes place in three main phases. First, a flap is created at the front of the cornea. Then, the laser is used to reshape the inner cornea, employing eye tracking to ensure accuracy. Finally, the flap is repositioned for healing. Patients are often given antibiotics and various eye drops to aid in the healing process.

When Is It Time for Cataract Surgery?

Cataracts are a medical condition that occurs when all or part of the eye lens is obscured by the clouding of tissue. As a result, an individual with cataracts will experience blurred or partially-blocked vision. If left untreated, cataracts generally continue to worsen, sometimes leading to a state of total blindness.

Unlike other medical conditions, there is no apparent benefit to having cataracts removed sooner than later. In general, doctors do not recommend having a cataract removed if it is not causing a significant loss of vision or difficulty during normal daily activities. On the other hand, patients who are experiencing serious blurring or blockage of their vision that is directly affecting their quality of life are encouraged to consider having their cataracts surgically removed.

Because there is some recovery time required after laser cataract removal surgery, a patient who has cataracts in both eyes will usually have each eye operated upon separately with several weeks of rest in between. This way, the patient will have at least one “good eye” to see with after the second surgery, and his or her surgeon can be sure that the first surgery did not have any significant complications.

Diabetes and Your Eyes

Diabetes is a serious condition with numerous major health repercussions. From slow wound healing to cracked feet and diabetic shock, diabetes sufferers may encounter a slew of frustrating symptoms throughout their lifetimes. In addition to these symptoms, doctors warn that diabetes can lead to a variety of serious eye-related complications, including glaucoma, cataracts and/or possible blindness.

Glaucoma is a condition that occurs when a build-up of pressure in the eye impinges on the blood vessels to the optic nerve and retina. As a result, the retina and optic nerve are eventually damaged, causing a slow loss of vision. Those who suffer from diabetes are approximately 40% more likely to develop glaucoma than others.

Like glaucoma, cataracts are another eye condition that is more likely to occur in diabetic individuals (diabetics are as much as 60% more likely to develop cataracts, and at a much younger age). Cataracts occur when the usually transparent lens of the eye begins to cloud, blocking the light that is necessary to see. Diabetics who undergo cataract surgery aren’t completely out of the woods, and may develop retina disorders and glaucoma.

Consuming fish frequently is widely known to be associated with several health benefits like a lower risk of heart disease and stroke, but it can also help keep your eyes healthy. Studies have found that people who eat fish 2 to 3 times per week have a lower risk of developing macular degeneration. Research suggests that the omega-3 fatty acids in fish and other foods are what may help protect adult eyes from macular degeneration.

Continue eating carrots and other fruits and vegetables

A diet that is generally high in fruits and vegetables will also help keep your eyes healthy. The antioxidants in fruits and vegetables reduce the effects of oxidation on the body and eyes, which may prevent eye illnesses like macular degeneration and cataracts.
